All Middle School and High School football coaches must complete school-district approved technique specific safety training similar to “Heads Up Football.” The training must include, but is not limited to, “hands on” Safer Tackling Techniques and Drills, Helmet, and Shoulder Pad fitting, concussion management with Return to Play Protocols following a concussion, Heat and Hydration training and Sudden Cardiac Arrest training. Football coaches will be required to repeat this training every two (2) years.
Football Safety Training Options:
- Develop a school district approved program that includes “Hands on” in-person training.
- Utilize a WIAA Master Clinician to train coaches in a school district approved program that includes “Hands on” in-person training.
- Utilize the WIAA Master Clinician under the WIAA Training program and Register Coaches through “Register My Conference”. Coaches will be required to take online NFHS Tackling course prior to attending “Hands on” in-person clinic.
- Utilize an outside Organization that delivers “Hands on” in-person Training for Football Coaches
- Certification is good for 2 years for any of the 4 options
Prior to attending an in-person hands-on training, coaches must complete the free NFHS Football Tackling Course via the links below. Coaches must bring a copy of their certificate of completion to the hands-on clinic for the clinician to verify.
REGISTRATION PAYMENT OPTIONS:
Credit Card:
If you are registering as an individual with credit card, the fee is $45 + $5.00 credit card fee ($50.00 total)
Purchase Order:
- Schools must provide a PO# to the WIAA.
- Coaches: Before registering, please communicate with your athletic director to confirm that you are required to complete the Cheer Coach Stunt Certification.
- Schools will be charged regardless of completion.
- ADs & Coaches: Please communicate with each other to determine who will send the PO number to Peter Ho at the WIAA Office.
- It’s up to the AD to track which coaches have registered from their school.
- If you do register using a PO, it will take AT LEAST one full business day to activate the PO (weekend registrations will not be activated until Monday at the very earliest).
- Individual coaches will register and click “pay by purchase order.”
- If you choose this option, the registration status will be “pending.”
- The WIAA will bill schools after each clinic is completed.
- A minimum of six (6) coaches must be registered in order to hold a clinic
- A maximum of 30 coaches per/clinician per clinic
- Please DO NOT register anyone other than yourself for a clinic. Those who plan to attend will need to register themselves under their own my247ed account

- Return to your my247ed.com account
- Select the “Conference Records” tab at the left of the page on my247ed.com
- Click on the “WIAA 2023 Football Safety Training Coach Certification” conference
- Select the “Sessions & Schedule” tab on the left-hand side of the screen
- Select “Confirm Attendance” (NOTE: If this step has already been completed, it is because you selected “Add to Your Schedule” prior to the clinic. Don’t panic — this is normal. Proceed to step 6 below)
- Select “Certifications & Forms” on the left-hand side of the screen
- Select “Start Application”
- This should take you to a page with the header “Are you ready to apply?”
- Click all the sliders on this page to the right, indicating completion
- Proceed to fill out the survey and download/sync your certificate
HOSTING A FOOTBALL SAFETY TRAINING CLINIC
If a clinic is not scheduled in your area, or at a time that meets your needs, you may submit a request to host a clinic. Send your request to Andy Barnes at least three (3) weeks prior to the first potential date listed and include the following information:
- Three (3) potential dates and times
- Name and physical address of the public facility that has been secured to host the event (include any specific instructions about where to park or enter the building)
- The WIAA will not pay any rental fees – if the facility charges a rental fee, you are responsible for covering that fee
Upon verification of availability from one of the WIAA Clinicians, the clinic will be posted on the WIAA Website and the clinic will be held provided a minimum of six (6) individuals preregister for the course.
